Organisation of the Nursery

Genesis Nursery provides children with a very high level of care in an environment that will speak for itself. Designed and organised by a parent, it will provide all parents with peace of mind by caring for their child in a happy, holistic, very comfortable and safe environment. It will, of course, be stimulating when necessary with lots of activities planned on a daily basis.

The Early Years Foundation Stage…

Throughout the nursery we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) for children aged from birth – 5 years old.

Having a curriculum from birth provides childcare professionals with the guidance to extend a child’s learning covering all areas of their development. There are six areas of learning within the EYFS…

  • Personal, Emotional and Social Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

The aim of the EYFS is to learn through play. For our very young children our focus is to provide opportunities for them to explore and experiment using their senses and to promote this we provide heuristic play and the treasure basket.

Treasure basket…

From birth children learn through experiences in their everyday environment. The opportunity to learn through experimentation and exploration is important to prepare for later, more formal learning. As soon as babies can sit comfortably and can grasp and handle objects, they can be given a Treasure Basket to play with. The baskets should contain a range of natural and everyday objects. The purposes of the collection are to offer maximum interest through the use of the five senses: touch, sight, sound, smell and taste. The babies gain rich sensory experiences through mouthing and handling the objects that they select, and show great curiosity and high levels of concentration. By providing a simple Treasure Basket we are giving young children the opportunity to explore and discover things for themselves and by themselves.

Heuristic play…

is rooted in young children’s natural curiosity. As babies grow, they move beyond being content to simply feel and ponder objects, to wanting to find out what can be done with them. Toddlers have an urge to handle things: to gather, fill, dump, stack, knock down, select and manipulate in other ways. Household or kitchen utensils offer this kind of activity as every parent knows, and can occupy a child for surprising stretches of time. When toddlers make an enjoyable discovery; for instance when one item fits into another, or an interesting sound is produced they often repeat the action several times to test the result, which strengthens cognitive development as well as fine muscle control and hand/eye coordination.

Other types of play we encourage…

Free play… Imaginative play… Adult lead play… Role play… Group play…
Creative play… Social play & Quiet play.

Spontaneous play…

All planning of activities provided can be altered to meet the needs of the children at any moment e.g. we fully understand that children may want to play with the ‘messy corn-flour’ again and again rather than having a set period when it has to be tidied away. Children are
spontaneous and we believe in following their interests and encouraging them to make choices.

Your child’s Key-Person…

Your child will have their own key-person when they start at Genesis nursery. The role of the key-person is to help settle both you and your child into the nursery to enable a smooth transition from your home to the nursery routine. The Key-person plays a lead role within the EYFS curriculum to plan activities to meet the individual needs of the children; each child has their own development profile and observations and achievements are recorded to show their development as a whole. All parents have free access to their child’s development profile and are encouraged to ‘add comments’ regarding achievements. The Key-person is also there to provide support and advice to parents and carers regarding all areas of your child’s well-being and to develop secure positive relationships with the children they care for.
